Wrinkle: Can Dakota Gold Replace Alfalfa Hay?

Dairy

Research Summary

Fiber from DDGS has slightly different characteristics compared with fiber from other sources such as alfalfa or grass hays. Research has yet to determine the effectiveness of DDGS fiber and how it affects rumen health and function. Research from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln starts to examine this relationship. Results from the research demonstrate that in addition to providing energy, the fiber in Dakota Gold can replace a portion of the alfalfa hay. This gives producers flexibility and also demonstrates the value of Dakota Gold.

Wrinkle: Can Dakota Gold Replace Alfalfa Hay?

Most dairy producers know that when they feed Dakota Gold or other non-POET DDGS, they can replace ingredients like soybean meal and corn. However, very few producers realize that they can also replace a portion of the fiber coming from other sources. Fiber (as measured by NDF) comprises approximately 1/3 of the nutrients in DDGS.
